Welcome to Haydn to Hip Hop!
Playlist project
1. Compile a playlist containing between 10-20 songs that reflect who you are. This can be songs that reflect your thoughts, experiences, hobbies, memories, dreams, family, culture, likes/dislikes, etc...
2. Create notes for the collection that provide an explanation and/or rationale for including the specific songs you chose for your collection. One explanation per song.
Blog Entry #1: Once you have created your playlist project, you will reflect and blog on what you experienced. Think about the following:Did any of the music that you researched for your playlist project shock you, or did you learn something new about a particular song that you didn’t know before. If so, explain in detail--starting with what your own thoughts were originally about the song, and then how your views and/or opinions changed once you did your research.

After seeing this film, you will write a reflective blog on your Weebly. Please use and include the following questions as discussion points:
Lopez says he "fishes" the city for inspiration for his writing, whereas Ayers stands near a statue of Beethoven for inspiration when playing music.
After seeing this film, you will write a reflective blog on your Weebly. Please use and include the following questions as discussion points:
- What does it take to make us happy in this world?
- Why do you help others? What do we gain from helping them? What do we risk losing?
Lopez says he "fishes" the city for inspiration for his writing, whereas Ayers stands near a statue of Beethoven for inspiration when playing music.
- What do these methods show about each person? Is there an "effective" way to find inspiration?
- Where do YOU find inspiration for writing, music, or creative pursuits?
- To what extent can music help and/or heal a person?

How Music can change a film:
Why are scary movies scary? Why do some films make you cry? What makes a scene effective? What if films were silent? What would happen then?
Please blog about your own thoughts on this subject, and add some research to it. *When you have finished the assignment below, come back and blog about your own experience creating your own scene(s) and adding music.
Check out what happens when different music is added to the Pirates of the Caribbean boat scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rn9V0cN4NWs
Here is another example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZ7PkTO0fNQ
It is your mission to research this and find the answers to the questions above.
THEN you will create you OWN scene(s) and add music to make your scene(s) effective.
First: Come up with your scene. Write it! Have fun with it! Be creative!
Next: You will record your scene on video.
Finally: Add music to make your scene effective. BONUS (Brownie points) ....Try adding different types of music to your scene.
You will present the final product to the class. Be ready to support the reason you chose the music that you did.

The slaves & the Jewish people during the holocaust: The power of music....
We will explore two horrific events in history side by side: Slavery in the United States & The Jewish people during The Holocaust.
What do those events possibly have in common? Music. The power of music allowed the people suffering the horrific abuse of both tragedies to escape, if only briefly, in their minds. We know that music was used to communicate in both instances, as well as give people hope. What can we learn from this?
Music has survived the test of time. Why? It does not appear to be essential to survival. (Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs) However, it has survived. We now know that during the darkest hours in the history of the world, music sustained people.
Half of the class will study the power of music during the Holocaust. The other half of the class will study the power of music during slavery. Each half of the class will present their findings.
For the half studying the power of music during the Holocaust: use the following websites to aid you. (You are also encouraged to find your OWN research!)
Music and the Holocaust: http://holocaustmusic.ort.org/
The Oldest Holocaust Survivor & Pianist: Alice Herz-Sommer (The Lady In Number 6)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrXHcQyixTE

***Above are just examples. Please feel free to research on your own as well.
For the half studying the power of music for the slaves: use the following websites to aid you. (You are also encouraged to find your OWN research!)
*A crucial part of your research will be to "decode" or interpret the hidden messages within the spirituals used to communicate with other slaves.
Black Spirituals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnqPUcFRD6A
Negro Spirituals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCg_XS2Yrs4
Please include examples of spirituals for the class. Play the spiritual that you chose for the class, and dissect it's meaning.
Great examples to include:
*Wade In the Water
*Follow the Drinking Gourd
*Swing Low, Sweet Chariot
*Roll, Jordan, Roll
*Go Down, Moses
*Ezekiel Saw the Wheel
*Deep River
How to present? This is where your creative forces must join together. Perhaps you make an iMovie. Perhaps you present using your Weebly or Prezi. Perhaps you lecture to the class. The goal is to make your presentation impactful on the class. Whatever you do, you MUST INCLUDE MUSIC! Examples: clips of music, background music, sing the music, perform the music! Make it memorable. Make it stick.
We will then compare and contrast the two. How was the power of music the same in both instances? How was the power of music different in both cases?

August Rush
"There's music in the wind and sky. Can you hear it? And there's hope. Can you feel it? The boy called AUGUST RUSH can. The music mysteriously draws him, penniless and alone to New York City in a quest to find-somehow, someway-the parents separated from him years earlier. And along the way he may also find the musical genius hidden within him."
The premise of August Rush is pure contemporary fairy tale or modern day fable -- depending on whether or not you think there is a moral to the story. August Rush (originally introduced to us as Evan Taylor played by Freddie Highmore) hears music everywhere:
"Sometimes the world tries ot knock it out of you. But I believe in music the way that some people believe in fairy tales. I like to imagine that what I hear came from my mother and father. Maybe the notes I hear, are the same ones they heard, the night they met. Maybe that's how they found each other. Maybe that's how they'll find me. I believe that once upon a time, long ago, they heard the music and followed it." August continues and asks us, "Listen. Can you hear it? The music. I can hear it everywhere. In the wind... in the air... in the light. It's all around us. All you have to do is open yourself up. All you have to do... is listen."
Respond to the above monologue by August Rush (a.k.a. Evan Taylor). What are your thoughts on the way he perceives, and then describes music? What does August (Evan) believe in? Does he have faith? If so, in what? What do others think of Evan's beliefs? Did the thoughts of any others change Even? Why or why not? What special abilities does August (Evan) have? Why did he have those abilities?
In your opinion, what does he mean when he says, "Listen. Can you hear it? The music. I can hear it everywhere. In the wind. In the air. In the light. It's all around us. All you have to do is open yourself up. All you have to do is....listen."
Think about your own self. What special abilities do you have? Why do you have them? Where did they come from? What beliefs do you carry? Are you willing to allow others to change your thoughts and/or beliefs? Explain.

Assignment #1
In order to fully understand the early music that became known as "Rock-N-Roll" you must first understand how it came to be; and then listen to and analyze this new age (at that time) music that changed the course of music forever.
*A link to explore the history: http://teachrock.org/
*Blog that has numerous musical examples from the 1950's : http://aceterrier.com/?page_id=4 *Please use this when doing your music analysis. OR you may use the list of songs from the "Billboard's Top 50 Singles, May 31, 1958" *Click on the PDF files below to access that list.
Analyze 15 different songs from the 1950's, and prepare to choose one song to present to the class, and along with your analysis, please give us the background of this song, artist, era, and most importantly: YOUR opinion and input. *Bonus: Find a song that's been recorded by different artists and compare and contrast that. (Like we did with "Hurt" by NIN and Johnny Cash.)

The Sixties: A turbulent time...
The music of the 1960's cannot be fully understood unless you know what was going on at that time--globally. It was a time of change. It was turbulent. It was the decade that changed the world. The United States was going through major changes politically, socially, and culturally.....but so were other parts of the world.

You must educate your classmates on the genre/artists you will be researching. HOW you educate the class is entirely up to you.....here are some ideas:
- Lecture Style with Visual Aids: posters, power-point presentation, Weebly presentation
- Video: iMovie, Animoto, Vine, etc.
- Drama: Act out your genre--lip sync or "air band" the artists of the genre; dress the part! ...Better yet: do a LIVE performance of a song(s) of the artist your study.
- Draw a comic strip/book of your genre.
- Write an essay on the genre. (Be sure to explain in great detail about the genre AND the artists.) *Be sure to include this on your Weebly.
Sixties Assignment #2:
Select 3 artists/groups from COMPLETELY different genres from the 1960's, and chose a song from each of the three artists/groups you chose. Analyze each song, and compare/contrast them to the others. (Use your own opinion, but also research each song's lyrics, sounds, etc. *Remember to look for "hidden messages" within the lyrics.) You will present this to the class as well. Ask the class to dialogue about their thoughts before you present your own findings/opinions.
Sixties Assignments #3:
Research the following music festivals below--in the order that they are listed. Blog about each festival. Be sure to compare/contrast. Discuss the artists, the amount of people that attended these festivals, and any interesting facts that you find about each one.
*The Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival
*Monterey Pop Festival

1970's Music: "It's only rock and roll." ~The Rolling Stones
The 1970's was a decade of a rock revolution. The early 70's saw the emergence of heavy metal bands, punk, arena rock, and hip hop. Arena rock, pyrotechnics, marketing, and money were infiltrating the entertainment and rock industry. Some rock purists felt that the music industry was getting out of hand. 1975 was a pivotal year in music...it was also the year that Vietnam ended-just as tragically as it had started. Some musicians by 1975 wanted to go back to the roots on which rock music had been based on. Leading that charge was Bruce Springstein, Bob Dylan, and of course, Elton John. Hip Hop started in the early 70's; Disco music arrived, and at the heart of it all: controversy.
You will dissect some controversial aspects of the music of the 1970's. Here are some ideas:
*Hip Hop: WHERE did it actually begin? Textbooks say it was started by Kool Herc in the Bronx in 1970.
Others will argue that Hip Hop started in Queens, and/or Brooklyn by a DJ named Grandmaster Flowers.
Present both sides of the issue. Include your own personal thoughts on the matter, if you so choose.
(Hint: your presentation could be a rehearsed "debate" amongst your group--each discussing their side.)
*Heavy Metal: So much controversy! Ideas you could research-
*Shock Rock/Arena Rock (umbrella term) WHAT was it. WHO was it. WHY was it called Shock Rock?
Or Arena Rock? *Hint: these groups were trying to "one up" each other by experimenting with
pyrotechnics, special effects, fake blood, etc. (Aerosmith, KISS, Ozzy, etc.) Be sure
to include specific examples of this--visual aids would be helpful: videos, pictures, etc.
*The "riff" (pun intended) between Heavy Metal and Punk.
*Judas Priest on Trial: Research the hearing, the allegations, and the outcome.
*Ozzy Osbourne court case dismissal. ~Compare & Contrast Ozzy's case to the Judas Priest case.
*Heavy Metal is more than 40 years old...how has it survived, despite the "moral panic" it has created
through the years.
*Disco music: Rock purists argue that it's not creative; it should be not it's own genre.
Look at this argument. What are your thoughts about Disco music? Make sure to research and
talk about "The Hustle." Be sure to educate your audience on Disco music.
*Bruce Springstein and Bob Dylan: Rock purists. What was the message they were trying to convey
within their music? ~Where they successful? If so, why? What was upsetting them about this time? (Hint: Vietnam war ending & no more draft...how did this affect society and the music?)
*Cat Stevens: research his life and music career. Why would he stir up controversy?
*Recreational drug use was huge in the 1970's. How did this play a role with the music/musicians of the time?
Later: You will choose a song of protest from this time period. You will research the lyrics behind the song, and discuss what the artist's message was. Do you agree or not?

Music of the eighties: "I wanna go back" eddie Money
The 1980's saw an emergence of pop, dance music, and new wave. Rock music continued to enjoy a large audience. Also the 80s saw the emergence of Thrash Metal, a genre which started on the west coast of the United States, particularly in California. Thrash metal was created as an underground genre in response to the glam metal scene, which many felt was stupid and lacked intensity. Notable thrash metal bands include: Metallica, Legacy, Overkill, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeath, and Exodus.
Soft rock, glam metal, and shred guitar characterized by heavy distortion, pinch harmonics, and whammy bar abuse became very popular. Adult contemporary, quiet storm, and smooth jazz gained popularity. Throughout the 80's, glam metal had become the largest, most commercially successful brand of music in the United States and worldwide.
The 1980's are commonly remembered for an increase in the use of digital recording, associated with the usage of synthesizers, and other electric genres featuring non-traditional instruments increasing in popularity. Also during this decade, several major electronic genres were developed, including electro, techno, house, freestyle, and Eurodance.
Throughout the decade, R&B, hip hop, and urban genres were becoming commonplace, particularly in the inner-city areas of large, metropolitan cities; rap was especially successful in the latter part of the decade.
ASSIGNMENT: Choose an artist and/or group from the 1980's and discuss how their influence changed the music of the decade. You must educate us on your choice. Become an expert as we will be allowed to ask you questions. You will present to your peers. You must have a visual aid, and you must include their music. Be creative! Remember, the 80's was the MTV decade, so be sure to include videos as well--and tell us if MTV assisted your artist in advancing their career (e.g. Guns-N-Roses "accident") or did it hinder them? (The artists who did not have "pretty faces" or "Video killed the radio star.") You may work on your own, or in groups. *No more than 3 in a group.

MTV: defining a decade of music (Blog Entry)
MTV was founded on August 1, 1981, and forever changed the way popular music was viewed....literally. It was the first television network to showcase music, and now in video form. It spurred huge controversy amongst artists of all types. Some claimed that the network destroyed creative license; other claimed the network was racist. Whatever the claims, it did change music as people knew it. *Watch the MTV Decade Documentary (click on the link above) before completing this blog entry.
*Describe your thoughts and views on the introduction on MTV in the 1980's. Look at some music videos and discuss your opinions.
*Describe your thoughts and opinions on the decade as a whole--be sure to include the pop culture, the consequences, and/or the successes that emerged out of the 80's.

Music of the 1990's
Rock music of the 1990's:
Alternative rock and it's sub-genres Grunge and Pop Punk expand in popularity, and ironically, explode into the mainstream in the 1990's. Major labels began luring independent bands away from small record labels. These artists are resistant to the demands of big record companies and unwilling to change styles to reach a mass market audience. Nevertheless, many alternative bands, including REM, The Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Smiths, and grunge bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Alice In Chains find success with mainstream audiences.
*Watch VH1's News Special: Grunge www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiC6xpailKg
*Assignment: Listen to the following songs by the 4 grunge bands: Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana. Then, using the attached "Music Analysis" guide, blog about each one. www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/films-videos-sound-recordings/virtual-gramophone/Documents/music-analysis-guide.pdf
- No Excuses by Alice In Chains: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQ6BgTitt1E
- Background information: This song was released in 1996. It was about Layne Stanley's (lead singer) struggle with heroin addiction. He died of an overdose in 2002.
- Come As You Are by Nirvana: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vabnZ9-ex7o
- Background information: This song was released in 1991. Kurt Cobain, lead singer, says the song is about how often times people act contradictory to what you might expect. It also has a "dig" to his dad in the line, "No, I don't have a gun." ~The story behind that is that his mom had taken all of Kurt's dad's guns away, and Kurt sold them to buy his first guitar at age 15. Kurt was angry at his father, who was abusive, and neglectful. When Nirvana became big, Kurt's dad wrote him a letter stating that he had done Kurt a favor by bringing him up the way he had, otherwise he wouldn't have anything to sing about--essentially taking credit for Kurt's success. *There has been speculation that the song was a foreshadowing to Kurt's suicide, but there is no proof that Kurt Cobain was thinking about that at the time of the songs release. He died of a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head 3 years later, in 1994.
- Jeremy by Pearl Jam: www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-AV2Lu_1wM (lyric video)
- Background information: This song was written by Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam's lead singer, and released in 1991. It was about the true story of 16-year-old Jeremy Welle, who had been tormented and bullied in school. Jeremy was late to English class one morning in Richmond High School in Richmond, Texas on January 8, 1991, so his teacher asked him to get a pass to allow him into class. He came back with a gun and shot himself in front of his class. The story struck a nerve with Vedder, as he saw himself as the potential bully when he was younger, and tormented a boy in his class. Vedder has feelings of guilt for doing so.
- Spoonman by Soundgarden: www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0_zzCLLRvE
- Background information: This song was written in 1994 as a "shout out" to Seattle's local street spoon performer--Artis--who has not only "street creds" but has become an international name. The band was mesmerized by his abilities, so wrote a song to honor him. He also appeared in the video for the song.
- Read the following article and "Grunge Speak" definitions about the hoax that Megan Jasper played on the New York Times when they called Sub Pop Records to get the "411" on grunge, and the "grunge speak" of the new (at that time) grunge flannel phase that swept the nation. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grunge_speak
Another alternative to radioplay and traditional mainstream success is the rise in Jam Bands influenced by the Grateful Dead. Noted for cross genre improvisation and extended jams, bands such as Phish, Blues Traveler, Dave Matthews Band, and Widespread Panic rely on album sales and live concerts.
Heavy metal morphs into new sub-genres such as rap metal or rapcore, nu metal and industrial metal. Electronic music continues to change as well, with techno and house splitting into new styles including trance, drums & bass, trip-hop and eurodance.
In the 90's Hip-Hop continues to expand in influence and grow in diversity. With huge growth in sales, radio airplay and overall success for artists like NWA, Public Enemy, Queen Latifah, Salt n' Pepa, Ice T, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Tupac Shakur, Cypress Hill Wu-Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg, MC Hammer, JayZ, Coolio, and many others.
- Assignment: Choose one of the Hip Hop artists from above: research, and blog about them. You will educate the class on your artist. Be sure to include some examples of their music in your blog.

Pop and teen-pop continue to appeal to a younger radio audience with the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, 98 Degrees, Hanson and The Spice Girls having major success. Late in the decade female teen pop artists ascend with major hits by Jennifer Lopez, Destiny's Child, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears. Contemporary R&B also scores big on the pop charts especially for Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, TLC, Toni Braxton, Lauryn Hill, and Boys II Men.
In the UK the term BritPop is coined as new bands Oasis and Blur battle for the top of the charts. Singer / Songwriters enjoy a resurgence especially for female artists like Norah Jones, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette, Tori Amos, Jewel, Natalie Merchant and Sheryl Crow.
Advancements in computers and software allow for digital music creation and recording on home computers. The internet and sound compression allow for digital distribution of music, often bypassing the need for a major label album release.
