We are learning that spirituals that the slaves sang were the beginnings of the evolution of music in America. This is an important part of American music history. To better understand why these spirituals were sung, please choose one of the following spirituals:Steal Away, Wade in the Water, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, The Gospel Train, Follow the Drinking Gourd, Go Down Moses, O Canaan, There is a Balm in Gilead, Deep River, O Freedom, No Auction Block for Me, Let Us Break Bread Together on our Knees, Now, Let Me Fly, Great Day, Free at Last. (You may also choose one on your own.)
You will blog about the spiritual you chose. You must include the text of the spiritual in your blog, along with the hidden meaning--what you researched, and you may also include your own opinion of what you think the message was. Please also include an audio clip of the spiritual that you chose, as we will share those in class. (You may insert a Youtube clip, or an MP3 audio clip.

"Defiant Requiem" is the remarkable story of Rafael Schachter, a brilliant, young and passionate Czech opera-choral conductor who was arrested and sent to the concentration camp of Theresienstadt (Terezin) in 1941. Under the most brutal of circumstances, and determined to sustain dignity, humanity, and hope within his fellow prisoners, he recruited 150 prisoners and taught them Verdi's Requiem by rote (repetition) in a dank cellar using a smuggled score, after grueling days of forced labor. They performed on 16 occasions for their fellow prisoners, with the last, most infamous performance on June 23, 1944, in front of high-ranking SS officers from Berlin and the International Red Cross. This forced performance, as part of the Nazi charade to assure the world that prisoners were well-treated, allowed the choir to sing to the Nazis what they dared not say through the Latin liturgy of the Requiem that promised redemption for the innocent and punishment for the wicked.
This documentary also chronicles how six decades later, conductor Murry Sidlin and a new choir bring Verdi's Requiem back to Terezin to reawaken this little-known story about the resilience of the human spirit. "Defiant Requiem" highlights how a rare form of courage, hope, and survival sparked an entirely unique method of fighting Nazi oppression, battling the worst of mankind with the best of mankind.
Blog about your reaction to this documentary. Perhaps speak of the inability to break the human spirit. Discuss the power of music. Do you find it interesting that both the slaves and the prisoners of concentration camps used music as a means of survival, expression, and/or rebellion. Discuss that aspect.
